STEM ACCESS FOR GIRLS IN SURINAME
Suriname is a developing country with a small and young population, with little over 550.000 inhabitants in total. According to Statistics Suriname’s latest figures provides a home to about 25.000 girls between the ages of 10 to 14. Poverty is rising, giving the fact that Suriname is going through a financial crisis since 2015 and looking at an unemployment rate of over 30% for young women between the age of 16 to 24, it is a given that something needs to be done to empower our girls, especially those living in underprivileged circumstances. They deserve a better perspective on life and need to realize that they can make a difference. For themselves, their families, their neighborhood and even our country.
By working with young girls (age 10 to 12) we will help them formulate their thinking about the career path they will pursue. It is important to gain a future perspective for themselves at this age, so they can make wise choices about their educational path to enable them to follow their dreams.
